SAFE DRINKING WATER IN REMOTE AREAS WILL BE AN ONGOING PROBLEM!
It is likely that FEMA will withdraw from Puerto Rico in March, 2018. There is little to no chance that Blind Vets who live in smaller communities (most do) will have electricity, tap water, telephones, or lights in their homes by then. All of our Blind Vets who do not have safe drinking water will be forced to boil drinking water collected from unsafe sources such as cisterns, streams or rainwater for an unknown extended period. At a cost of $177.00, a single Big Berkey Water Purifier will purify 6,000 gallons of water for less than 3¢ per gallon.
Replacement filters at $110/set can be installed in the unit repeatedly and bring the cost of water down to 1.8¢ per gallon.
Providing a Blind Vet with a filter frees up money they desperately need for medicine and to meet other needs associated with their handicap.
MOSQUITOS CARRY DISEASE AND ARE A SERIOUS HEALTH THREAT TODAY IN PUERTO RICO!
With all the other problems Puerto Rico’s government faces at this time, mosquito control is not being addressed, especially in smaller communities. Hordes of mosquitoes are swarming every area and breeding in record numbers in puddles and ponds left behind by the Hurricane and the ongoing rainy season. Anyone working outside is deluged by swarms and homes are infested day and night,
Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes include: Zika fever, malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, chikungunya, yellow fever, filariasis, tularemia, dirofilariasis, Japanese encephalitis, Saint Louis encephalitis, Western equine encephalitis, Eastern equine encephalitis, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, and La Crosse encephalitis.
For a donation of $5.00 you can provide 10 “Mosquito Eliminators”, each of which repels mosquitoes for up to 220 hours. That is 92 days of protection for 5-1/2¢ a day!
0.6% Pyrethrins PIC MOSQUITO REPELLING COILS are used outside to create a barrier against mosquitoes trying to enter a house. One package of 10 of these coils will last 50-70 hours at a cost of $3.50 per pack.
Other personal protection items are available as well, and our goal is to get as many of these to our Vets as possible RIGHT NOW! We need to step up to bat for them in this moment of urgent need!
We’ve got a great, organized and motivated TEAM ready to see that our Blind Vets are taken care of. All we need is YOU! Please help!
